Extension privacy policy
The Jobs with Joe extension for Chrome, Edge and Brave has no analytics, no tracking, no ads and needs no account. This page lists everything it stores and everything it sends.
Last updated: 15 October 2026. Applies to extension version 2.0.0 and later.
What stays in your browser
- Your new tab settings: which widgets show, Jobs or Web search mode, quick links, your first name for the greeting (if you add one) and the clock format.
- Your For-you preferences (level, cities, roles), saved jobs, hidden jobs and companies, and your last few searches.
- Copies of job lists and counts, so the new tab shows instantly. They refresh in the background.
- If you use Apply Copilot, the application profile you type in, and the applications it tracked.
Settings use Chrome’s storage. If you have Chrome sync on, Chrome may copy your settings between your own browsers under Google’s terms. We can’t read any of it. Removing the extension deletes it.
What it sends, and to whom
- Jobs with Joe’s job database (Supabase): read-only requests for public job listings and counts. When you type in Jobs search or the popup search, the text you type is part of the request.
- This website (jobs-with-joe-web.vercel.app): the text you type in Jobs mode, for suggestions; the text you paste into the scam check, only when you press Check (it isn’t stored); and, only if you connect your account, requests for your saved jobs and tracker summary, Apply Copilot answer drafts and tracked applications, sent with a token you can revoke from your account.
- Company logos: to show a logo, your browser loads an image from Logo.dev, or Google’s favicon service as a fallback, using the company’s website domain. Like any image on the web, these services see your IP address. No job, search or personal details are sent.
- Web searches go straight to your browser’s default search engine through Chrome’s search feature, under that engine’s privacy policy. They never pass through Jobs with Joe.
- Anonymous usage counts (since 3.3.0), sent to this website: once a day, a “this install is active” ping, and, when you open a job’s panel, apply, save or run a resume match, which job and which of those it was. The extension sends a random install ID it made itself (not linked to you, your Google account or your device); our server turns it into a one-way code before anything is stored, and job events use a code that changes every day. Nothing about the pages you visit, your searches or your settings is sent. These counts power the view and apply numbers on job cards and our public open stats.
- Update check and settings (since 3.4.0), from this website: every 6 hours the extension asks for the latest version number (
/api/extension/version) and for announcements and display settings (/api/extension/config). These are plain downloads of public files: no install ID, settings or personal data are sent with them. Config can only change text, switches and the order of categories; it can never run code.
Opening a job or applying takes you to this website or the employer’s site, where their privacy policies apply. Clicks on Apply may pass through our /out link, which records an anonymous click as described in the website privacy policy.
What it never does
- No third-party analytics, tracking pixels, advertising or fingerprinting. The only usage data is the anonymous counts above.
- No selling or sharing of your data.
- No reading of the pages you visit. Apply Copilot, if you turn it on, runs only on the five job-board sites you allow, and never submits a form.
- No remote code: everything the extension runs ships inside it.
Permissions
| Permission | When | Why |
|---|---|---|
| storage | Required | Keeps your settings, quick links, saved jobs, recent searches and cached job lists in your browser. |
| search | Required | Sends a Web-mode search to your browser’s default search engine. We never see it. |
| Jobs with Joe database and website | Required (host access) | Reads public job listings and counts, and calls the website’s suggestions, scam check and (only if you connect) account features. |
| contextMenus | Optional, off by default | Adds the right-click “Check this job for scams” item. Asked for only when you turn it on in Options. |
| alarms | At install (since 3.4.0; Chrome shows no warning for it) | Schedules the update check every 6 hours. The new-jobs toolbar badge (every 3 hours) and deadline reminders (twice a day) still stay off until you turn them on. |
| notifications | Optional, off by default | Deadline reminders: one notification when a job in your tracker has a stated last date within 2 days. Checked in your browser from jobs you saved; asked for only when you turn reminders on in Applications. If granted, also one notification per new extension version. |
| scripting + five job-board sites | Optional, off by default | Apply Copilot: fills standard fields on Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby and Workday forms. Asked for only when you turn it on. It never presses Submit. |
